A Musical Event of Gigantic Proportions

Up to 90 local musicians will unite for the first time at the Gold Coast Arts Centre for Sheer Indulgence performed by the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra, The Albert Community Choir and World Renown classical Guitarist Daniel Cunnington.

The combination of 30 vocalists with 60 instrumental musicians makes Sheer Indulgence the largest concert ever produced by the community-based Orchestra who have been performing on the Gold Coast for over 23 years.

Conductor Mark Turpin has guided the orchestra through several concerts over the years but admits this performance is quite unlike any other he has directed before.

“It is an absolute privilege to be accompanying the wonderful guitar virtuosity of Daniel Cunnington in the ‘Fantasia Para un Gentilhombre’ by Rodrigo, it is one of my favourite pieces,” Mr Turpin said.

“The classical Spanish renaissance guitar solo gels perfectly with the full orchestra, the audience is in for a real treat.”

“The last concert was great but this next one will just blow you away!”

Daniel Cunnington commenced his formal studies through the prestigious London School of Guitar gaining the highest accolades.
This was followed by further performance studies at the Queensland Conservatorium where he also achieved the highest performance awards from the Academic Board.

He plays concerts regularly, performing as a soloist and a guest artist for many Chamber and Symphony Orchestras.
He has recorded for the ABC and BMG records and is in demand as a player in the traditional style as founded by the great Andre Segovia.
Sheer Indulgences also features The Hebrides Overture- Mendelssohn, Polovtsian Dances- Borodin, Suite from the Gadfly- Shostakovich, Pavane- Faure and Bolero- Ravel.

Young Partnership leads orchestra to ‘Suite Surrender’

Aspiring lawyer Nicholas Stone, 21 and Marketing manager Yana de Groot, 24 have teamed together for the first time to lead The Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra for the up coming ‘Suite Surrender’ concert.

The accomplished violinists from vastly different professional backgrounds are thrilled to be sharing the prestigious role of concert master that is usually performed by only one member of the strings section.

Originally from New Zealand, Nicholas Stone a law and Philosophy student from Griffith University on the Gold Coast has displayed an extraordinary talent in the four months that he has been with the orchestra.

“I’m really looking forward to the experience of leading the whole orchestra of 50 or more musicians,” Mr Stone said.

“I’m quite lucky to be able to do this at such a young age as the concert master is usually a long-term member of the orchestra.”

The Gold Coast local Yana de Groot, Sales and Marketing Manager for Think Mobile has seen the orchestra develop over the past two years and has always wanted to be able to guide the orchestra in a performance

“I started to play with the orchestra thinking it would just be a bit of fun and a chance to meet new people but over the past two years I have grown to love the culture and professional music we tackle each concert,” Ms de Groot said.

“Every performance is a challenge but I like to get involved in all areas of the orchestra and have been the editor of the orchestra’s newsletter for the past 8 months.”

‘Suite Surrender’ features many classical favourites such as “Morning”, “The Death of Aase,” “Anitra’s Dance” and “In the Hall of The Mountain King” from The Peer Gynt Suite No 1 by Edvard Greig.

The orchestra is also lucky enough to perform the Danish Folk-Music Suite by Australian composer Percy Grainger which was recorded by the Melbourne Symphony orchestra and is still in copyright.

‘Suite Surrender,’ Saturday 28 April 7.30pm and Sunday 29 April 2.30pm. Tickets Adults $22, Concession/Student $20, Friends of the Philharmonic $15 and Children under 12 free. For proffered seating call Gold Coast Arts Box Office, 5588 4000.
